Put your hand up if you’re in the club that isn’t in love with their home. Once the novelty wears off and you’re a few years into owning your home, it’s easy not to have the same appreciation for it. And don’t get us started on how it can feel when you’re not happy with your home because there’s things that need doing to your home.Â
Still, you’ve invested in it, so now it’s time to invest some more and fall in love with it again.
Below, we’ll give you some tips on how to reignite the passion in your love/hate relationship with your house.
Change the Things You Hate
It makes sense to start with the things you hate.Â
Let’s assume that it is an uneasy wooden board that won’t stop creaking, hanging lamps that you feel like they’ve been there since the 80s, a door that doesn’t close properly, or a wardrobe that you have not used for years – or, worse, a wardrobe that has half a door hanging off.
We’re sure that everyone reading this can pick out a handful of things they hate about their home, and we’re sure that everyone can make minor changes to rectify it. Take, for example, the door that doesn’t close properly. Modern interior doors are one of the most inexpensive things you can buy and make such an impact on the room. Granted, floorboards and wardrobes are a little more expensive, but that’s the price you pay for being a homeowner.Â
Create a Cosy Atmosphere
Nothing beats a cosy atmosphere, especially in autumn, winter, and spring…and summer, if you’re reading this from the UK.
The dark nights call for snuggling up in a cosy warm room with Netflix on. There are so many subtle ways of adding some cosy love to the home. An electric fire (if you don’t have a fireplace), fairy lights around the ceiling edge rather than a lamp, a throw so big you’ll never come back out of it. If you’re struggling for cosy inspiration, Pinterest is the best place for it.
If nothing else, warm lighting should be something you focus on. Warmer light bulbs and high-quality candles that don’t burn out in a day is the perfect way to brighten up a room.Â
Refresh Your Space With Colour
Do you feel your home is too plain and boring? Now, not everyone thinks it’s an easy task, but spend a weekend painting your living room (assuming it’s the main room you spend your time in), and see what difference it makes. Pick a completely different colour that matches the rest of your furnishings so you don’t have to spend any money other than on the paint. And if you’re using the excuse of not knowing how to paint, watch a YouTube tutorial, wear clothes you don’t mind getting ruined, grab a glass of wine, and spend a Sunday afternoon doing it. We promise, a glass of wine makes everything easier (or a beer!).Â
And if you want our advice, try being a bit more daring. As long as the colour suits the furnishings, don’t be afraid of picking a colour that isn’t a beige or neutral colour.Â
Or, if you don’t want to paint but still want more colour, look for new bed sheets, curtains, etc.
Declutter and Organise
One of the quickest ways to rekindle the romance in your home is to tweak some things and declutter. Messy environments give rise to messy thoughts, and once you start to declutter, you may realise how attached you are to your home. Establish a routine for where and how to store everything, including your clothes and kitchen wares. If every object in the house has its rightful position, the house will gradually become more orderly and peaceful.
You don’t have to go all the way minimalist, although decluttering and eliminating the items that are not useful may help you to make your space look more organised and purposeful. Give away or sell possessions that are unnecessary to your current routine, and use the chance to arrange the rest to simplify daily activities.
Create Your Dream Room Just For You
A dream room just for you? Heavenly. A dream room is a room that’s everything you’ve always wanted. Sorry, this section doesn’t apply to everyone, but it does apply to anyone with a spare room that’s sort of a nothing room.
Spend the money and turn it into a room just for you and we promise you won’t look back. We’re thinking of a walk-in wardrobe, a mancave, or a room that contains all the essentials of self-care.
Turning a space exclusively for your interests and hobbies shifts the way you view your home.
Do you think you can fall in love with your home again? There are so many things you can do to change your opinion on your home – you simply have to make the time and effort…and have a few pennies to spare!
