What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects more than 200 million people worldwide, with at least 18 million in the U.S. alone.

There are two common forms of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. With type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin, so the body cannot maintain healthy blood glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition in which the body does not make enough insulin and is unable to use the insulin it does make.
